Cary Livestock focuses on breeding superior quality calves. We do this through several important practices. We first ensure that all cows are in tip-top health for breeding. This means proper feeding and nutrition: grass, hay, silage, protein tubs, and the occasional grain in the winter time. Our cow herds are checked on daily to ensure health and safety of all the livestock. Proper tagging and vaccinations are given periodically.
Our cows are larger framed than most herds. This is because we breed with Charolais bulls, most of them from Cobb Ranch in Augusta, Montana. These bulls are heavy-set and produce a strong calf from birth, giving it a head start and a better chance of survival in unpredictable weather conditions and predators. We recognize the benefits of investing in high quality bulls and cows in order to produce a healthy calf.

We keep around 200 mama cows / 200 calves on the ground between 4 farms, typically selling the yearlings in the fall. We also run feeder cattle, buying and selling around 500 head of cattle every 120 days.
Yes, but not strictly. Our cow-calf herds are mostly grass fed, but they do receive grain in the winter time to stay warm and full and as an occasional summer treat when grass is dried up. We feel that feeding grain allows for better quality meat, and a full belly is always better than the opposite.
All of our feeder steers used for beef are fed a grain diet.
